About
TRUST BUILT year on year

Since 1984, Watts & Hughes has built more than just structures, we’ve built trust. For over four decades, we’ve taken pride in delivering complex projects with care, precision, and integrity.
Watts & Hughes Construction has been part of New Zealand’s building industry for over 40 years, evolving from a small, hands-on operation into a nationally recognised company.
Founded in 1984 by its founding principals, including Craig Watts, whose leadership and commitment to quality helped shape the company’s early direction. From the outset, Watts & Hughes was built on a clear vision: delivering high-quality projects through trust, reliability, and strong relationships. Early success came from a steady stream of commercial and industrial work, with a focus on collaboration, craftsmanship, and sustainable growth rather than rapid expansion.
By the early 2000s, Watts & Hughes had expanded across multiple regions and broadened its services, formalising its structure to support continued growth. It went on to diversify its portfolio across commercial, industrial, residential, and public sectors, developing particular strength in design and build delivery.
Today, Watts & Hughes operates nationwide as a multi-regional construction company. While it has grown in scale, it remains grounded in its founding principles, quality, strong partnerships, and a commitment to doing things right.

Craig Watts - Founder
Drawing on extensive domestic and international construction experience, he played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s foundations, standards, and long‑term vision. As Managing Director, Craig helped grow the business from its early beginnings into a nationally respected construction firm. Having retired from the business in late 2025, his legacy of quality delivery, strong governance, and enduring client relationships across New Zealand endures throughout the company to this day.
We believe construction is about more than the end result, it’s about leaving a positive mark on the landscape and the communities we’re part of.
What sets us apart is our people. Many of our team have grown their careers with us, united by a shared commitment to craftsmanship, reliability, and doing what’s right.
